California Screening Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (CASBIRT) Services is a County of San Diego funded program. CASBIRT is an established, cost effective method of assisting individuals to reduce or stop alcohol and or other drug use by utilizing medical visits. Services are integrated with primary care and emergency medical services distributed throughout San Diego County. Patients 18 and older are routinely screened by certified, bilingual Health Educators during their office/ER visit using standardized, scripted screening instruments. Depending upon scores, patients receive reinforcement for healthy behaviors, a brief intervention session and or referrals to brief or in-patient treatment.
