John D. Clapp, Ph.D. Dr. Clapp is the Director of the Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies, Professor at the School of Social Work, Adjunct Professor for the Graduate School of Public Health, at San Diego State University as well as the Director for the U.S. Department of Educations: Higher Education Center. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1995, with a specialization in health and social science research methods. Dr. Clapp's research interests are in the epidemiology and prevention of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, with an emphasis on person and environment interactions. With over a decade of experience working as a researcher in the AOD field, Dr. Clapp has published over 80 journal articles and technical reports and authored over 80 conference papers. His work has appeared in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol, Addiction, Prevention Science, Drug and Alcohol Review, Drug and Alcohol Dependence among numerous other top research journals. Dr. Clapp has been awarded over $16 million in research and evaluation grants and contracts from the National Institute for Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, The California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, University of California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program, the County of San Diego and the U.S. Department of Education. He has been an AOD consultant for numerous organizations including the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Department of Education, and the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Services. He is currently the Principal Investigator for a National Institute of Health funded alcohol prevention study examining college students' drinking environments. Dr. Clapp has been recognized numerous times for his work and was named one of SDSU's Top 25 Outstanding People (2002), Social Worker of the Year by the SDSU Social Work Alumni Association (2005), was awarded the Monty Award for distinguished Alumni from San Diego State University (2006), and he received a SDSU Presidential Leadership Award to support community-university research (2009). His work has received international media attention with coverage in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The London Daily Telegraph, ABC National News, among numerous others. |
