Susan Woodruff, Ph.D.
Consultant

Dr. Woodruff is a behavioral epidemiologist, Professor at the School of Social Work at San Diego State University and Director of the Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies and Services. She has over 25 years of experience in the area of health research and has served as principal investigator, co-investigator, or statistician on several large epidemiological and intervention studies. She was the evaluation manager on CASBIRT (California Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), a SAMSHA-funded project and was the PI on a NIDA-funded study to assess the effectiveness of SBIRT specifically for illicit drug use. Dr. Woodruff has also served as the lead epidemiologist for the Naval Health Research Center’s Combat Trauma Registry and has authored and co-authored over 120 articles in scientific journals.


Melinda Hohman, Ph.D., MSW

Consultant / MI Trainer

Dr. Hohman is a Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at San Diego State University. She has been a trainer in Motivational Interviewing (MI) since 1999, training community social workers, Child Protection workers, probation officers, and addiction counselors across Southern California and in other states. Dr. Hohman has published numerous articles on the topics of Motivational Interviewing, substance abuse assessment and treatment services. She is also the author of the book, Motivational Interviewing in Social Work Practice.


Mark Reed, Ph.D.

Consultant

Dr. Reed is an Associate Professor at SDSU, School of Social Work where he has been on the faculty since 2008. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to coming to SDSU he worked as a Research Scientist for the UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. His work focuses on substance use etiology and prevention. He has served as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on grants funded by the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. His experience includes direct research roles on evaluation projects focused on testing the effectiveness of two San Diego County/State of California funded Screening and Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) contracts. These projects evaluated the SBIRT intervention approach in both primary care and emergency department settings. Dr. Reed’s role on both of these projects was to oversee research design as well as evaluation efforts. He is currently the PI on a Department of Defense funded grant (Force Health Promotion Project) that will allow researchers to make adaptations for using an alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment approach at San Diego Naval Medical Center, and conduct a randomized control pilot trial with active duty military personnel.


William Matulich, Ph.D.

Consultant / MI Trainer

Dr. William (Bill) Matulich is a licensed clinical psychologist, Motivational Interviewing trainer, public speaker, award winning artist, and best-selling author. He is a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and has been training and conducting workshops since 2006. He helps health care providers at all levels understand communication and client motivation so they can be more effective agents for change. Dr. Matulich's experience includes working in private practice, psychiatric hospitals, correctional facilities, schools, the U.S. Naval Health Research Center, transitional living facility for the homeless, and the VA Healthcare System. Dr. Matulich has trained hundreds of people all over the United States and conducts multiple MI workshops and trainings each year.


Fabian Martinez, BS

Certified Health Education Specialist

Since 2002, Mr. Martinez has provided SBIRT services to approximately 30,000 patients in 8 emergency/ trauma unit and primary care settings throughout San Diego County. He has trained and supervised over 60 health educators to provide SBIRT services that utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques. In addition, Mr. Martinez has played a key role in the development of SBIRT training manuals and protocols. He has also worked with hospital administration, management and providers to implement SBIRT services within their health care organizations.  


Irma Cano Murphy, MSW, BS

Community Resource Specialist / Health Educator

Ms. Murphy is a social worker at San Diego State University Health Promotion Department. She has a master’s degree in social work and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Diego State University. Ms. Murphy supervises the SBIRT services provided at SDSU Student Health Services which includes development, training and coordination of services in a primary care setting. She also provides case management for students with acute and chronic medical and mental health needs providing referrals to healthcare specialists in the surrounding community and patient follow-up for continuity of care. Irma is a field supervisor for the SDSU School of Social Work and has been providing supervision to graduate students completing their practicum training since 2012. Irma is also adjunct faculty at National University and teaches in the School of Health and Human Services, Department of Community Health. She teaches classes in topics related to alcohol and drugs, addiction, sexuality, health policy and advocacy and health communication.
