College Bar & Party Prevention Project: Reducing Risk in College Drinking Environments

Principal Investigator(s): J.D. Clapp and A. Shillington
Funding Source: NIAAA
Funding Amount: $1,516,500
Project Period: 2005 - 2009

Funded by the National Institute of Health, National Institute for Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, this research study seeks to develop and test interventions in settings where students consume alcohol and interact directly with their environments. As such, the study moves forward the environmental alcohol prevention field by testing empirically-based interventions in specific high-risk settings like parties and bars. These settings can be conceptualized as microenvironments nested within the larger campus and community environments.

The overall research plan is phased in three main segments:

Phase One
The aim of Phase One is to develop an empirically-based typology of student drinking environments, in order to identify environmental risks and protective factors related to heavy drinking, intoxication and alcohol related problems. Phase One will also serve to develop and establish the validity and reliability of environmental measures, and develop and statistically test an explanatory environment model of alcohol consumption and alcohol related problems.

Phase Two
The aim of Phase Two is to develop, field test and produce Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) and Party Intervention materials.

Phase Three
The aim of Phase Three is to test the efficacy of Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) to increase informal control of alcohol and reduce risk factors associated with intoxication.
